Maximum Demand & Diversity Calculator
Apply a diversity (demand) factor to your total connected load to estimate the maximum demand in kW and kVA and the design current — to size the incomer, main breaker and busbar.
Estimate maximum demand and design current from connected load. For a sized, built main distribution board, send us your load schedule.
Why maximum demand drives panel sizing
Loads rarely run together
Not every load runs at full power at once. A diversity (demand) factor scales the connected load down to a realistic maximum demand — the basis for sizing.
Sets the incomer & busbar
Design current from the maximum demand fixes the main incoming breaker, the busbar rating and the incoming cable of the MDB.

Maximum demand
What is a diversity or demand factor?
It is the ratio of a system's maximum demand to its total connected load — a percentage that reflects loads not all running at once. Typical values depend on the installation type and local guidelines.
How do you calculate maximum demand?
Maximum demand (kW) = connected load × diversity factor. Divide by power factor for kVA, then compute the design current from the voltage and phase — which this tool does.
Why does maximum demand matter for a distribution board?
It sets the incoming breaker, busbar rating and cable size. Getting it right avoids nuisance tripping on one side and oversized, costly switchgear on the other.
