Multispan MS 5716RU 16-channel temperature scanner and data logger with an LED display and high and low alarm indicators for every channel
The Multispan MS 5716RU-M1 scans 16 temperature inputs and shows high and low alarm status for every channel.

How to add high and low temperature alarms, door monitoring and independent multi-point logging to cold rooms and chillers in the UAE, using Multispan CC-series controllers and the MS 5716RU data logger.

What a cold room really needs

A cold room has three jobs: hold the temperature, tell someone when it drifts, and prove afterwards that it was held. The first is a controller's job. The second needs an alarm that reaches a person — a local sounder, a beacon, a building-management signal or an auto-dialler. The third needs a record. Food-safety and pharmaceutical cold-chain systems rely on all three, and auditors will ask for the records. Typical targets are chilled food at 5°C or below, frozen food at −18°C or below and refrigerated medicines at 2–8°C, but always confirm the limits in your HACCP plan, on the product label and with the relevant authority.

Layer 1: alarms from the controller

The Multispan Cryo CC family covers most single-room needs. The CC 512 (10 A compressor relay) and CC 522 (20 A compressor relay) add a second, separate alarm relay that changes state on a high- or low-temperature condition, which you can wire to a beacon, hooter, auto-dialler or BMS input. The CC 515 and CC 525 instead carry a 12 V DC buzzer for a local audible warning, which suits kitchen and display units where staff are nearby. All use a 10 kΩ NTC probe reading −50 to 99.9°C. Set the alarm limits just outside the working band, and set a delay so that a normal door opening does not trigger a false alarm.

Door monitoring with the CC 548

Door-open events are one of the commonest causes of temperature excursions in busy cold rooms. The CC 548 adds a digital door-switch input to a 20 A compressor relay and an alarm relay: when the door opens the controller can pause cooling, and it raises an alarm if the door stays open past an adjustable alarm delay of 0–99 minutes, with an adjustable alarm on-time of 0–999 seconds. That gives staff time to load and unload without nuisance alarms, while making sure a door left ajar is reported.

Layer 2: independent logging with the MS 5716RU

A controller's own sensor is both the thing that controls the room and the thing that reports on it, so a drifting probe or a stuck relay can hide a problem. Best practice is an independent monitoring system. The Multispan MS 5716RU-M1 is a 16-channel temperature scanner and data logger with 16 inputs and 8 outputs: it displays each channel, has front-panel high and low alarm indicators for every channel, logs to a USB pen drive in an Excel-compatible file, offers RS-485 Modbus for a BMS, and has PC software for the 8- and 16-channel versions. One unit can monitor several rooms, or several points in one large store, for cold-storage mapping, validation and compliance records.

Probe placement and calibration

Where you put a probe matters as much as which instrument reads it. Keep control probes out of the direct air stream of the evaporator fan and away from the door and from heat sources, and place monitoring probes at representative points — the warmest part of the room and in the product zone. For a realistic reading of product temperature, some operators place a probe in a sealed bottle of liquid so that it reacts slowly, like product, instead of following every air-temperature spike. Check probes against a calibrated reference at least once a year, or more often if your quality system requires, and use the controller's offset adjustment (−9 to +9°C on the CC series) to correct a known difference, recording every adjustment.

Wiring the alarm so it actually reaches someone

An alarm that nobody hears is only a record. Wire the alarm relay's contacts to a beacon and hooter in a place that is staffed, to a GSM or auto-dialler that calls or texts a duty phone, or to a BMS input. Think about failure modes: if the building loses power, the controller and its alarm relay may be dead, so use a dialler with a battery backup or arrange the alarm circuit so that loss of power also raises an alarm. Test the whole chain — probe, controller, relay, sounder or dialler — on a schedule, and keep a log of the tests.

UAE-specific points

High ambient temperature and frequent door openings mean cold rooms in the UAE work hard, so choose compressor delay and defrost settings that suit the climate, and keep condensers clean. Power interruptions need a plan: an ATS and standby generator, or a dialler with a battery backup, protect stock. Where humidity matters as well — produce stores or dry stores — add a humidity controller. Al Misbah Al Sehri stocks the Multispan CC controllers and the MS 5716RU in Dubai and builds refrigeration control panels, so we can supply the instruments, or the complete panel, for your cold room.
