Timers and relays in a control panel
Timers and relays in a control panel

Understand Multispan on-delay, off-delay and cyclic timers plus digital counters, how they are used in UAE LV panels, and how to select the right model for your control circuit.

Why timers and counters earn their place in UAE panels

Almost every control panel built in Dubai relies on a small timing or counting device somewhere in its logic. A timer sequences a star-delta motor start, holds a solenoid open for a fixed dwell, delays a compressor restart to protect the refrigerant circuit, or runs a pump for a set period. A counter tallies production strokes, bottles, or machine cycles and switches an output once a preset total is reached. These are inexpensive DIN-rail devices, yet they decide whether a sequence runs safely and repeatably. Multispan, an Indian instruments manufacturer since 1986, builds a broad timer and counter range that maps neatly onto UAE panel practice, and Al Misbah Al Sehri is the authorised Multispan distributor for the UAE and GCC.

On-delay, off-delay and one-shot timing explained

The timing mode defines how the output behaves relative to the supply or trigger. An on-delay timer waits a set period after it is energised, then closes its output — used to stagger loads or delay a contactor pull-in. An off-delay timer keeps its output active for a set period after the trigger is removed, common for run-on fans and lubrication. A one-shot or single-pulse timer gives a fixed output pulse regardless of how long the input stays on. Multispan ON-OFF delay timers such as the DT Series combine on and off delay behaviour in a single analog unit, so one device covers most straightforward panel timing needs.

Cyclic (recycling) timers and star-delta timing

Some applications need repeated switching rather than a single delay. A cyclic or recycling timer alternates its output on and off continuously — driving intermittent dosing pumps, flashing beacons, or periodic flush cycles. The two intervals may be equal or independently set, and timing can begin either on or off. A closely related job is the star-delta transition: a dedicated timer holds the motor in star for a short acceleration period, then transfers to delta. When specifying a Multispan timer for these duties, confirm whether you need symmetrical cycling, independent on and off periods, or a single changeover, because the wiring and output logic differ between them.

Multispan timer models for UAE panels

For UAE distribution and control boards, three Multispan timers cover the majority of requirements. The DT Series is a DIN-rail analog ON-OFF delay timer with fixed ranges such as 10, 30 and 60 seconds and 15 and 30 minutes — simple, robust and easy to set. The DI-22 is a multi-range delay timer adjustable from about 0.1 seconds up to hours, giving one part number that suits many jobs. The DI-22U adds a universal supply input, roughly 12 to 240 V DC and 20 to 240 V AC, ideal where the available control voltage varies. All are genuine, CE-marked units stocked in Dubai.

Digital counters: preset, up/down and totalising

Counters register discrete events from a sensor, proximity switch, or dry contact and act on the total. A preset counter counts to a target you set, then energises an output or trips a machine step — for batching or length cutting. An up/down counter increments and decrements to track net quantity, useful for stock or in-out tallies. A totaliser simply accumulates a running count for production records. When choosing a Multispan counter, match the input type and speed to your sensor, decide whether you need a retained count after power loss, and confirm the output rating suits the relay or contactor it will switch.

Selecting the right timer or counter: a checklist

Start with the function: on-delay, off-delay, cyclic, or counting. Fix the range you need and leave headroom — a multi-range DI-22 avoids re-ordering if the timing changes on site. Match the supply voltage to your control circuit, or specify the universal-supply DI-22U where it varies. Check the output contact can carry or interpose the contactor coil; switch large coils through an interposing relay rather than the timer contact directly. Confirm DIN-rail width and front access for setting the dial or display. For counters, verify sensor type, counting speed and whether the count must survive a power interruption. Sharing these details up front pins the correct model first time.

Building timers and counters into your panel

A timer or counter only performs when it is wired into a coherent control scheme — correctly triggered, correctly interlocked, and switching a suitably rated output. As a Dubai-based switchgear manufacturer, Al Misbah Al Sehri builds MDB, SMDB, MCC, ATS and pump-control panels to IEC and DEWA practice with Multispan timers and counters fitted, set and tested as part of the assembly. Because we are the authorised Multispan distributor and also a genuine multi-brand supplier of contactors and breakers from ABB, Schneider, Legrand and others, the timing device and the gear it controls come from one accountable source.
