PID vs on/off control: pick the right action

PID control continuously modulates the output using proportional, integral and derivative terms to hold a tight setpoint with minimal overshoot — essential for extrusion, plastics, packaging seals, curing and precision drying. Most Multispan TC-series controllers offer both, with auto-tune to set the PID constants for you. If your process oscillates or scraps product on warm-up, PID is usually worth the small price difference over a basic on/off unit.
Input types: J/K thermocouple vs PT-100 RTD
Match the controller input to your sensor. Type J and Type K thermocouples are common on furnaces, ovens and higher-temperature processes, with K reaching well beyond 1000 C. A PT-100 RTD gives better accuracy and stability at lower and mid ranges, so it suits HVAC, incubators, water and food processes. Multispan universal-input models accept multiple sensor types — typically J, K and PT-100 — selectable in the setup menu, which simplifies stocking and future changes. Cooling and cold-room applications have different needs from heating: reverse (cooling) action, compressor protection with an anti-short-cycle delay, defrost timing and fan control.
